Best Android Phones in India [July 2011 Edition]

Here is another compilation of the best Android Smartphones in the Indian Market, spanning all price ranges.
with the frequent releases and Price drops seen, wee seem to be spoilt for choices.so let's get started.

Dual-core Android smartphones: [20K+]

Samsung Galaxy S II: Without any doubt, if you have money this is the phone to go for. It has got its share of criticism due to heating issues, which will probably be sorted out by a future firmware update.
Price: INR 29,999 | Android version: 2.3.3
Other options in this category – HTC Sensation & LG Optimus 2X

Single-core high end Android smartphones:  [INR 20K+]

There is quite a competition in this category. It was hard to make a decision between them, yet we have decided on two phones with single core processors.

HTC Incredible S: A very potent Android smartphone from HTC, a rather new smartphone although HTC has been releasing single core Android phone since HTC Desire. Clubbed with Android 2.3.3 and 4 inch display with an 8MP HD shooter, Incredible S makes a strong case.
Price: INR 25,940 | Android version – 2.3.3
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: This awesome looking device from Sony Ericsson comes with a great display in the form of 4.1 inch screen with Bravia Engine. Processor is same as of Incredible S but lacks in the terms of RAM from the HTC device, but the great camera can make do for that.
Price: INR 26,890 | Android version – 2.3.3
Other options in the category: HTC Desire S, Desire HD, Xperia Play [for gaming freaks], Dell Venue, Dell Streak [if you don’t mind big screen], HTC Desire, HTC Desire Z and Acer Liquid E

Mid-range Android smartphones: [12K to 20K ]

Recently a series of price drops and new devices launches have made mid-range a happening Android arena. Yet another category to make hard decisions, but choice is always good for consumers.

Nexus S: We always like Google phones. You get the Android updates before anyone else and have the great hardware. If you are looking for pure Android – this is it.
Price: INR 19.9K | Android version: 2.3.4
LG Optimus Black: Recently launched Optimus Black is the lightest Android smartphone in high-end as well as mid range categories. It comes with a great 4 inch NOVA display along with 1 GHz processor. Only problem is the Android version, which will get updated to Gingerbread soon.
Price: INR 19,310 | Android version: 2.2
Other options in the category: Samsung Galaxy SL, Spice MI-410, Motorola Defy, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Acer Liquid Metal, HTC Wildfire S and Motorola Milestone
You might be wondering that high-end and mid-range categories have ended and we have not mentioned Galaxy S anytime. We were not sure to put it in which category. That’s why it is here on its own.
Worth It:
Samsung Galaxy S: A very popular and hit smartphone from Samsung, Galaxy S still have great hardware and almost latest Android version. We are not sure about the price, because you should be able get it around 21K. A great display and awesome developer love.

Entry-level Android smartphones [0 to INR 12K]

With a series of Samsung love here, and lot of rebranded OEM devices have made entry level segment crowded. It is very hard to point out which is better than which in this segment, so we are not choosing one device here. We have made a lsit of few devices that are worth their money in this segment.
  • Dell XCD35
  • LG Optimus One
  • Samsung Galaxy Fit
  • HTC Wildfire
  • Acer Liquid Mini
Other options in this category: Seriously there are a lot of them – Samsung Galaxy Pop, Galaxy Pro, Dell Aero, Dell XCD28, Micromax Bling 2, Micromax Andro A60, Motorola XT5, Motorola Charm, Motorola Flipout, LG Optimus Me, Spice MI-310, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro and SE W8

For CDMA lovers:
If you don’t like GSM phones, there are few CDMA options as well in India. MTS HTC Pulse and Samsung Galaxy Pop CDMA are two devices you can go for officially. If you are still not satisfied, ebay.in has some cool unlocked CDMA Android options imported from US.
For QWERTY Lovers:
HTC Desire Z is still the best high-end slide out QWERTY in India, otherwise you can go for the old Motorola Milestone [till Motorola releases its successor in India] or Samsung Galaxy 551 [on the budget front]
On the portrait QWERTY front, we have a lot of options in Galaxy Pro, Motorola Charm or Acer beTouch E210.
For Dual-Sim lovers:
Motorola XT800 and Spice Mi-270 are the two options you have. One for mid-range, other for budget segment.

RIM to unveil seven new BlackBerries soon

Warding off investors' anger at their annual meeting at Waterloo near here Tuesday, BlackBerry co-CEOs announced that seven new smart phones running a new operating system will hit the market soon. Declining market share, shrinking revenue, profit warnings and delays in replacing the aging handsets have triggered investor anger at the two co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis who control management as well as board at the BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM).

Calls for making board independent of management have grown shriller as RIM stock has sunk more than 50 percent this year - hovering at about $27 now. Admitting that RIM faced 'some challenges,' the co-CEOs managed to control investor anger Tuesday, with Lazaridis announcing that seven new BlackBerry smart phones running a new operating system will be unveiled in the coming months. The release of the seven smart phones, including the new BlackBerry Bold, will again catapult the wireless giant into the lead role, he said.
"It (the new Bold) may have delayed us, but we are going to come out ahead," said Lazaridis who started RIM in the 1980s. Warming the hearts of investors, Jim Balsillie added, "Mike and I, along with the executive team, are closely managing this transition and have positioned the company for continued future success."
The new line-up of BlackBerry smart phones will be run by RIM's powerful new operating system used in its PlayBook tablet.
Responding to the prevailing rumours of RIM's takeover by Apple or Microsoft, Balsillie said a rights plan would be put in place in the "blink of an eye'' if a hostile takeover bid was mounted against the company. Assuring investors, he said, "If there is anything that will make you sleep better at night that I can do, I will do it." There have been rumours that cash-rich Apple or Microsoft could buy out RIM whose net worth is now just $14 billion. BlackBerry has sunk from top to the third place in the US smart phone since October under onslaught from Apple's iPhone and Google Android devices.

5 Cool Android Tricks

The Android has been a tough competitor to the other Mobile OS in the market. There are already some of the greatest phones running on android. And the list obviously contains symbolic devices like the Samsung Galaxy. The android still is fairly new, so a lot of its users are not entirely familiar with the hidden tokens and surprises holed in by Google. Yes android tricks! And here we will mention five of the coolest tricks that have remained somewhat unknown.

Gesture Search

My favourite in the lot. I myself came across it accidentally and boy is it cool! Basically this trick allows you to search your phone using your fingers to write letters instead of the on screen keyboard. Now what you do is, instead of using the keyboard while searching, tap the little hand symbol on the screen then draw a letter. The OS will register the alphabet and search your phone for entries starting with that letter.
The gesture search can be set to search your entire phone, or specific folders. And there’s its use! I use the gesture search for my folders only, so when I use it, other data does not show up.

Creating Shortcuts and Adding Slots

Another neat android trick! You see use some websites very often and it is a real bother opening the browser every time. Android has the option of creating shortcuts to websites on your home screen. Simply press and hold the site in your browser’s bookmarks and select “Add Shortcut to Home” and the website will be added in a slot on your home page. Now the problem is slots get filled up.  To get more slots, download the app “UltimateFaves Carousel” from Google Market. This app will allow you to add 16 new icons to each slot and will manage them in an efficient 3D rotating viewer.

Other Browsers

Although the Android browser put in by Google does an impressive job, but there are some other very interesting browsers in the market. My favourite is the Dolphin Browser. This app allows you to download videos from YouTube to your phone! The browser is fully compatible with social networks and allows the user to sync bookmarks with other browsers. The Dolphin Browser also allows the use of the Gesture Search.

Voice Dial

Of course everyone knows how to use voice dial and the presence of this app may not be a surprise. Rather its absence may have been seriously criticized. Obviously the app can be used to call people by just saying “Call…” followed by the person’s name… but in the Android, it has a much greater purpose! You can use the Voice dial to search and open almost anything on your phone. Just say “Open” and then the name of the program or folder you want.

Last Used Programs

On most android phones pressing and holding the home button will open up a list that shows the last six programs you have used. As on average most of us use 4 programs regularly, this trick will save you scrolling through the menu.
