HTC no longer to be locking bootloaders on it's devices

HTC’s decision has come about its bootloader policy and as you have already read in the headline company has announced that it will not lock the bootloaders going forward. This is the best news for all the Android enthusiasts as well the developer community.
The statement came out today on company Facebook page and did not have more details. We are expecting that company will give a way to unlock the previously released devices too including HTC Sensation, which have been released with bootloader locked.

HTC Wildfire S finally available in India via LetsBuy and Flipkart

While HTC is yet to make an official announcement for the HTC Wildfire S, it seems like the device is already available in the market. Online retailer LetsBuy and Flipkart are now taking orders for the Gingerbread powered Wildfire S, and you can also opt in for the cash on delivery option at both retailers.
The Wildfire S runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is powered by a 600MHz processor. It sports the HTC Sense UI, WiFi and 3G connectivity, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. This phone goes up against the likes of Samsung Galaxy Ace, but it has the advantage of an intuitive UI and latest Android firmware.

Online retailer Flipkart is selling the black colored Wildfire S for 14,299 INR, while LetsBuy is selling the grey colored Wildfire S for 13,999 INR. The device is a great choice for those searching for a new mid-range smartphone, especially when compared to last year's HTC Wildfire. Not only does the Wildfire S sport a lower launch price, specs wise, it also has an HVGA screen, more RAM and a slightly faster processor. We reckon the Wildfire S could turn out to be one of the best mid-range phones, but we'll save our conclusions for when we get our hands on it.

Here's the press release from HTC

LG Optimus 2x available in India for INR 27K

LG has finally made dual core Android smartphone Optimus 2x available in India. Online retailer Flipkart is now selling it for INR 26,990, much below the announced recommended price of INR 30,000. It however is shipping it within 6 to 8 days, which is a bit odd considering Flipkart’s record of shipping in three days normally. They might be still waiting for the stock, which would be due in a few days, so this long shipping time.

Anyways, it is certainly good news for everyone waiting for this dual core beast in India. LG Optimus 2x has been getting negative publicity recently due to the rebooting issues on the phone, but LG has confirmed that it is going to release a fix soon for this problem.
LG Optimus 2X comes with nVIDIA Tegra 2 processor along with 4 inch display and a 8MP camera with 1.3 MP front cam. Specification-wise it is the best Android device right now in Indian market, until Samsung releases its Galaxy S successor in the country, which is going to be soon.
Optimus 2x has already become the favorite toy of Android developers considering the amount of potential this phone has, we might be seeing the official CyanogenMod builds pretty soon, Modaco has already released one.

HTC Incredible S Review

Pros:
4-inch display.
HTC Sense UI.
Aluminum unibody.
Internet Pass Through.
Unique design and a great finish.
Good 8 megapixel camera.

Cons:
Lack of Android Gingerbread. (although an update is promised)
Single-core processor.
Slightly bulky compared to other offerings.
Sound quality could have been better.

The Bottom Line

The HTC Incredible S may seem like an underpowered device but it has more that what meets the eye. HTC Sense UI elevates the Android experience, performs efficiently. It has a good camera, and is slightly more affordable than dual-core smartphones.

Rating                  Market price          Street price
8 |10 Good            Rs. 28,900/-            Rs. 28,000/-

SECOND OPINION

The Incredible S is a beguiling little beast. Looking at its name, familiar rump, and mostly run of the Android mill specs, you'd think it little more than an incremental update. And yet, pick it up and play with it for even the briefest of instances

FULL REVIEW

During the Mobile World Congress 2011, HTC unveiled the Incredible S which is a part of their new range of Android devices, an evolution of the original HTC Incredible. Bundled with an 4-inch display, Android 2.2 FroYo, a beautiful aluminum unibody and Sense UI, this smartphone is a great option for those who would like to purchase a new phone in the sub-30,000 range.

Design

The HTC Incredible S is a great looking phone with a soft finish which gives it a great feel in the hand. It weighs 135.5 grams and includes a 4-inch S-LCD Gorilla Glass display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The screen may not be as amazing as Samsung’s Super AMLOED but, it does an admirable job even under sunlight, although you many need to pump up the brightness.

We like HTC’s designs mainly because they are slightly different than what every other manufacturer has been doing. It is not the slimmest device in the market and also feels slightly more bulky, but in looks it is far superior the Samsung’s Galaxy S. It has a unique shape which adds some personality to the devices as most of the smartphones today come in a plain candybar form factor. Unlike many other smartphones it does not have a glossy body hence it does not attract any fingerprints.

The device also comes with a micro-USB port which can be used to charge it or connect it to a computer, it includes a 3.5mm jack and a power button on the top. It has the touch-sensitive Android buttons below the screen, although I personally would prefer hardware keys. What's cool is that the orientation of these keys changes in respect to the orientation of the device, which we think is really smart. On the back, the device includes an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, speakers and the battery cover.

User Interface and Features

One of the most superior features on the phone is its user interface and all the credit goes to the amazing HTC Sense UI. This version has some great improvements, the new  arsenal of features includes the ability to choose themes, widgets, social networking and the stock Google Apps which come with Android. HTCSense.com integration which adds a couple of other applications.

The device efficiently runs Android 2.2 FroYo and the manufacturer has promised that the device would get future Android updated including Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and most probably Android 2.4. Connectivity-wise it includes Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, A-GPS and HSPA capabilities. It also includes DLNA capabilities even though it does not include any HDMI connectivity options. The Incredible S comes with some extra pre-loaded applications including – QuickOffice, SoundHound and Kobo.

One of the most unique feature which comes with the device and what we believe could be an extremely essential feature amongst Indian consumers is the Internet Pass Through capability. This feature allows users to connect the device to the Internet via the computer using an USB cable. It is quite the opposite of USB tethering. Apart from this, the device has all the generic Android features, but in a more presentable format, due to the HTC Sense.

Multimedia and Camera

The Incredible S comes with an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and the ability to record 720p HD videos. It is an above-average camera with good auto focus capabilities. The images look brilliant, there is considerably less amount of noise, and the contrast seems pretty decent compared to some other device. The Samsung Galaxy S is a tough competitor when it comes to the imaging capabilities.

The video quality is impressive, it has very less grain amount and it efficiently records at 720p HD quality. The autofocus also comes very handy in video recording as it is extremely responsive, and with a simple touch you can determine the area of focus.

The sound output is not very impressive. The loudspeaker volume is very low although crisp, and this may not appeal many consumers in India. The earphone quality is also not the best and even though HTC has included the SRS plug-in, switching it on does not make a huge difference.

Performance

Despite the fact that the HTC Incredible S has the same processor and RAM as the one on the Desire HD, it feels much faster. Even though the HTC Incredible S has a single-core processor compared to newer dual-core phones, it's Quadrant score of about 1550 wont tell you anything about the performance and smoothness. The UI feels much more polished compared to many other Android devices available in the market.

The web browsing experience on the Incredible S is smooth, lag free and even Flash content plays efficiently on 3G as well as on Wi-Fi. However, high definition 720p video does show some drop in frame rates while streaming over the web. The call quality is regular - though not even close to what some Motorola handsets have to offer. It does not give you any interference, but a weak signal drops the sound quality. It has a 1450 mAh lithium ion battery, which gives about 4-5 hours of talktime and roughly about 13-16 hours of battery life depending on the usage.

Verdict

To keep it simple we would like to call the HTC Incredible S a dark horse in a time where other manufacturers have launched dual-core devices. Although one disappointment is that the Incredible S won’t be able it run dual-core optimized applications, but it will still give a tough competition to dual-core phones, due its slightly affordable price, efficient performance and the intuitive Sense UI.

Google rolls-out Android 3.1 and unveils Ice Cream Sandwich at 'Google I/O'

During Android’s keynote presentation at this year’s Google I/O, the company revealed its next Honeycomb update and their plans to have a common OS between tablets, cell-phones and Google TV. The hope to achieve the latter with a version of Android, which has been code-named Ice Cream Sandwich. However, there isn’t much information to go around about Ice Cream Sandwich at this time, besides the general direction the company is heading with Android development.

On the other hand, we know a few things about Honeycomb 3.1, not least of all that the update is all ready to be rolled out and the ball in now in the carrier’s court. Some of the addition made to Android Honeycomb with this new update includes option for the user to resize widgets. To demonstrate this feature Google used the Gmail widget, which when resized gives a preview of the inbox. A major update is the inclusion of USB support that will allow users to connect I/O devices like a keyboard or even a gamepad. Lastly, the update will include all the bits needed to access Google’s newly launched movie rental service.

Comment Anonymously On Facebook Comments With Defaceable

Now express your irrational hatred of a certain author, startup or device, without having to attach your Facebook account (and don’t want to go through all the trouble of creating a dummy Yahoo/Aol account)? Well you might be in luck with a new Chrome extension that lets you comment sans identity on Facebook Comments.

Defaceable allows commenters to leave and see anonymous comments by other Defaceable users, both on the Facebook platform and on sites that use Facebook Comments like TechCrunch or the LA Times. Defaceable works by parsing the html code and extracting the ID of the comments you’re looking at, checking against the Defaceable database for defacements it can show you.

Inspired by the anonymity system of Likealittle, Defaceable users comment as fruits (“Posting as Peach,” “Grape said” etc) and can check back into the Defaceable website to view and vote on top posts and trending topics. While this does defeat the purpose of having Facebook Comments in the first place, the fruit thing seriously makes it hard to be negative; Just try posting something, anything mean, when your user name is Watermelon.
You can download the Chrome extension here (you can’t see the comments if you don’t have the extension).

Google partners with OEMs and Carriers to give you quick updates

New Android devices from LG, Moto, Samsung, and SE To have 18 months software update guarantee

It seems google has finally realized the root problem with Android, and has worked with its hardware partners to announce that all the new devices from manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, HTC, Samsung, Motorola and LG will receive the latest Android platform upgrades for 18 months after the device is first released. There is another clause too, which might be a little problematic – ‘as long as the hardware allows’.

Hardware manufacturers might use it for their benefit, but we hope they don’t.
Google is also hoping that other hardware will join the ride as well. Currently they are working on guidelines on how fast the software updates will reach consumers, which is surely one major area of concern considering the Samsung Galaxy S update debacle in United States.

Founding Partners of this faster updates group:
Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola and AT&T

Skype Sold To Microsoft for 8.5 billion $

The Wall Street Journal and Gigaom have both confirmed that Microsoft purchased Skype yesterday, in an all-cash deal of $8.5 billion. The two companies will be making an official announcement tomorrow.

Microsoft seems to have clinched itself a deal that had potential suitors in Facebook and Google. Skype is likely to become an integral part of Windows Mobile, competing against Google Talk and FaceTime on Android and iOS. Skype is primarily used for video conferencing and voice calls, and is available practically all mobile and PC platforms including Nokia phones.

Competitors to Skype include Fring, Jajah, Tango Videocalling, and hordes of other small time VoIP services that have a fraction of Skype's 650 million user base. Skype, made by the creators of File-sharing app Kazaa, uses a peer to peer system to reduce bandwidth overheads. Facebook, an eventual beneficiary of this buyout could use this technology to enable voice and video calling among its 600 million user base. At present, Skype 5 enables users to call mobile phone listed on Facebook profiles using SkypeOut.

Note: Microsoft's plans post acquisition outlined in this press release that makes things official:

Microsoft to Acquire Skype
Combined companies will benefit consumers, businesses and increase market opportunity.
REDMOND, Wash., and LUXEMBOURG – May 10, 2011 – Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: "MSFT") and Skype Global S.à r.l today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake. The agreement has been approved by the boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype.
The acquisition will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, bringing benefits to both consumers and enterprise users and generating significant new business and revenue opportunities. The combination will extend Skype's world-class brand and the reach of its networked platform, while enhancing Microsoft's existing portfolio of real-time communications products and services.
With 170 million connected users and over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010, Skype has been a pioneer in creating rich, meaningful connections among friends, families and business colleagues globally. Microsoft has a long-standing focus and investment in real-time communications across its various platforms, including Lync (which saw 30 percent revenue growth in Q3), Outlook, Messenger, Hotmail and Xbox LIVE.
Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.
"Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world."
Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer.
"Microsoft and Skype share the vision of bringing software innovation and products to our customers," said Tony Bates. "Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype's plans to extend our global community and introduce new ways for everyone to communicate and collaborate," Bates said.
"Tony Bates has a great track record as a leader and will strengthen the Microsoft management team. I'm looking forward to Skype's talented global workforce bringing its insights, ideas and experience to Microsoft," Ballmer said.
Speaking on behalf of the investor group that sold Skype to Microsoft, Egon Durban, managing director of Silver Lake, said: "We are thrilled with Skype's transformation during the period of our ownership and grateful for the extraordinary commitment of its management team and employees. We are excited about Skype's long-term future with Microsoft, as it is poised to become one of the world's most dynamic and comprehensive communications platforms."
Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009. Skype has made impressive progress over the past 18 months under Silver Lake's leadership, increasing monthly calling minutes by 150 percent, developing new revenue streams and strategic partnerships, acquiring the intellectual property powering its peer-to-peer network, and recruiting an outstanding senior management team.
Other members of the selling investor group led by Silver Lake include eBay International AG, CPP Investment Board, Joltid Limited in partnership with Europlay Capital Advisors; and Andreessen Horowitz.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties hope to obtain all required regulatory clearances during the course of this calendar year.

About Skype
Skype is communications software whose purpose is to break down barriers to communication. With an Internet-connected device, families, friends and colleagues can get together for free with messaging, voice and video. At low cost, they can also call landlines or mobiles virtually anywhere in the world. Skype has recently introduced group video, allowing groups of more than two people to do things together whenever they're apart.

The phone is a result of a joint development effort between the academia and commercial interests. The prototype has been christened PaperPhone and it is capable of handling most of the basic tasks that are expected of a contemporary handset.

The display portion of the phone measures 9.5 cm diagonally and the built-in software is capable of displaying e-books, playing music; in addition to placing calls. One thing it still cannot do is play videos, due to E-ink based displays’ low refresh rate. The user interacts with the phone by bending certain areas of the phone; something that can best be described as bend-gestures. This interaction is possible because of the resistive bend sensors across the length of the display. It is still capable of monochromatic display; however, it does not seem to have the ink-bleeding problem that was common with some of the early application of the technology. Research paper on this technology will be presented during the Computer Human Interaction conference that is scheduled to take place in Vancouver, Canada on May 10. Also expected at the conference is a strap-on computer called ‘snaplet’ that can be tied around the wrist.

Best Graphics Card Under Rs.10,000

2011 is shaping up to be a really good year for PC games with Bulletstorm and Dead Space 2 taking charge; we have other great titles like Crysis 2, R.A.G.E, NFS Shift 2 to look forward to. While these games won't be too difficult to run even on modest systems since all the games are multi-platform, choosing the right card will make all the difference in the overall gaming experience. Looking at the market, we've noticed some companies have really aggressive pricing compared to others, for instance for AMD cards, Sapphire and MSI offer you the lowest rates and for Nvidia, we have ZOTAC and MSI again. It's sad to see other companies like Asus and XFX come up with absurd pricing which makes you wonder how they manage to make any profit in India. Even though their cards are of good quality and all, at times, the premium is just too high which makes no sense in investing that kind of money.

Today, we'll be taking a look at some great deals that we've managed to find under Rs. 10,000. While we all want fancy expensive cards, the reality is we don't really need them especially if you game on anything lower than a full HD resolution. We all saw that Crysis 2 is easily playable on a 9600GT on "Gamer" settings up to 1920x1080 so going by that alone, the cards we've picked today will easily handle all the upcoming games unless of course we get some shitty console port, then it's hardly our fault. One more thing before we get started, the list is made based on Mumbai prices so if you find a better deal elsewhere, post in the comments below.

Under Rs.3,000 - Stick to Onboard

If you're on a budget that's anything under 3K then it's advisable you don't buy anything. I'd say work a bit harder and jump straight to our second category. The problem is that there isn't any worthy card at all under this price bracket that would give you playable frame rates. The cards under 3K are designed for HTPC use which means they are slightly better than onboard graphics, enough to offload 1080p videos and provide a wide array of multichannel audio options via HDMI.

Under Rs.5000 - Sapphire HD 5670 512MB/1GB

Our under 5K still remains the HD 5670. Sapphires offering come with a nice cooler and a larger fan for better and more silent cooling. Here you can buy either the 512MB or the 1GB version as the price difference is a couple of hundred bucks. The extra video RAM is nice to have although it's not needed much. The 1GB version is available for Rs.4,700 while the 512MB can be bought for a little less for Rs.4,400.

Under Rs. 6000 - MSI N250GTS-2D512 512MB

Yes, the G92 chip is still going strong and for a smidge under 6K, it's currently the best buy. MSI has shed the reference cooler and gone for something bolder using their own custom heatsink. The GTS 250 is built using 55nm fabrication and is the second coming of the 9800GTX+. It has the full 128 shaders of the G92 core and comes with faster clock speeds. The 9800GT is also selling for around the same price and we strongly advise you to stay away from it as it has the crippled G92 core same as the 8800GT. There's also the HD 4850 for those who are interested in an AMD solution but we'd stick to the GTS 250.

Under Rs. 8000 - ZOTAC GTS 450 1GB

In the 7-8K price bracket, we have two very interesting cards to choose from, AMD's HD 5770 and Nvidia's GTS 450. Out of the two, we once again go with Nvidia here, the ZOTAC GTS 450 1GB to be precise. Not only is it cheaper than the HD 5770, it's performs slightly better as well. For the most part, it performs neck to neck with AMD's offering the power consumption on idle is a lot lower compared to the HD 5770.

Under Rs. 10,000 - Sapphire HD6850 1GB

We were going to do an 'Under 9K' category but then after looking at the current prices we couldn't be bothered. Sapphire's 100315L HD 6850 1GB is available for a little under 10K which makes the existence of the newly launched GTX 550 Ti kinda moot. Even if they launch the card for under 9K, the HD6850 would still make for sense since for one, it beats the GTX 460 1GB so it's a given it will beat anything slower than that. Sapphire has made one attractive looking card that's also easy on the wallet.
